Peggy Bowers,
Founder of Bowling 4 The Cure
Peggy Bowers, founder of Bowling 4 The Cure, passed away on December 28, 2010 after a brave fight against her nemesis – cancer. Bowling 4 The Cure is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for cancer research.
Peggy was born Peggy Christopherson in Baudette, Minnesota on October 30, 1948. She married Howard E. Bowers on August 15, 1964 and spent sixteen years as an Air Force wife, many of them in foreign countries and remote stateside locations. Her husband, Howard, served in Vietnam as part of his 20-year service to the Air Force. In 1976, Peggy was named Air Force Wife of the Year by the 26th Air Division.
Peggy’s service to the community was recognized in 2008 when she was selected Arrowhead Community Bank’s Volunteer of the Year. Peggy was a long-time member of the Northwest Women’s Network. She also enjoyed participating in the Rowdy Red Hats as its queen mother.
Peggy and Howard are the parents of two sons: Howard, Jr. (Mary Ann) of Peoria, Arizona and Christopher (Becky) of El Mirage, Arizona. They also have six grandsons: Brandon, Joshua, Zachary (Howard, Jr.); and, Dakota, Dominick, and Devin (Chris).
Preceding Peggy in death was her mother, Rose Mabel Borgen and sister Mary Ann Scheffknecht. Other members of her family include Billy Egdorf of Ash Flat, Arkansas; Mabel Beckler of Mandan, North Dakota; Esther Briese of Cut Bank, Montana; and Pamela Butler of Cadillac, Michigan.
A memorial service celebrating Peggy’s life is scheduled for January 30, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Virginia’s House, 6838 North 59th Drive in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation be made in Peggy’s honor to Bowling 4 The Cure.

A Strike Against Breast Cancer
Peggy, founder of Bowling 4 The Cure, says that although the annual October bowl-a-thon raises money for cancer research, she is compelled to make the efforts against cancer relentless and ongoing.
She observes, "The results we have with the bowl-a-thon have been awesome every fall. However, two years ago, my sister died of breast cancer, right after the bowl-a-thon. And recently we even lost our dog Pokey to breast cancer. When I say this is disease threatens everybody, I mean exactly that. We have to keep on pushing until the threat of breast cancer is just a distant memory."
She concludes, "They say money can't buy happiness. I don't agree. I think a lot of us will be overjoyed when research finds a cure for this killer of our loved ones."
Bowling 4 The Cure hosts an annual bowl-a-thon. Last year's event was hosted with Lakeview Lanes, 105th Avenue and Thunderbird.
Peggy says, "Our raffle prizes are reason enough to come. People are very generous with us, and even the folks cheering the bowlers on from the sidelines have a wonderful time."
Each bowler/participant pays $20 apiece, which includes shoe rental and three games.
